Well…this is awkward.
After numerous, NUMEROUS, reports stating that Ava DuVerney, the director of Salem, would be directing the upcoming Phase 3 movie Black Panther for Marvel…reports have arisen saying that Ava DuVerney will NOT be directing Black Panther.
Yep, awkward…
In fact, it wsa DuVerney herself who made this statement, revealing that she and Marvel didn’t see “eye to eye” on how this movie should play out:
“I guess I’ll declare my independence from this rumor on 4th of July weekend and Essence weekend! I’m not signing on to direct Black Panther,” DuVernay tells Essence. “I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do.”
“I loved that they reached out to me. I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs,” she adds. “In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later… I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it.”
So…where does that leave Black Panther? Well, other candidates were said to be in the running, we’ll just have to wait and see if they’ll come take the role. Phase 3 is fast approaching…
