Well, you can stop all the rumours and speculation because Batman Vs Superman – or whatever it’s called – has its Lex Luthor and Alfred Pennyworth and they were both totally left field. Don’t you just love that?
Yes, Variety has confirmed that Lex will be played not by Bryan Cranston or Joaquin Pheonix but by the man who played Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg. And, personally, I love it. I think he’s the perfect choice for a modern day Lex Luthor.
And, in the role of Alfred Pennyworth – a role made famous by Micheal Gough and then later Michael Caine in the movies – is none other than Jeremy Irons. Again, personally, I love this idea and think it makes as much sense as Caine did in the Dark Knight movies; Alfred should be a tough, smart, loyal and formidable character and Irons is the embodiment of all these.
Director Zack Snyder said of Lex Luthor: “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940.
“What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
On the casting of Alfred he sadi: “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure.
“He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”
They join Henry Caville as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince as well as returning actors Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), and Diane Lane (Martha Kent)
Batman Vs Superman hits cineams in May, 2016.
