Chris Columbus says Gremlins 3 WILL NOT be a reboot…

So we’ve known a new Gremlins was coming for a while and, like Ghostbusters, Point Break and Big Trouble In Little China, we were under the impression it was to be yet another reboot (here) but it seems that may not be the case at all…

Original star of the first two movies, Zach Galligan, has gone on record with Yahoo! as saying that Chris Columbus, the man behind the originals along with Joe Dante, is adamant that the remake will not happen: “Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade.

“So the only thing they will be – and apparently are going to be – doing is something along the lines of like ‘Jurassic World’, where it will be 30 years later.”

This is great news… there’s no reason why, if written properly, the movie can’t continue the story AND introduce it to a new audience who – hopefully – will then go and track down the originals. However, it seems Galligan isn’t sure if he’ll be back:  “I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.”

“Hopefully they won’t use too much CGI, or the CGI will be really good like the ‘Planet of the Apes’ movies, and hopefully we’ll have some practical effects too.”

“It seems to still speak to people across the years. I think that’s because the film’s not very date specific. My hairstyle is maybe the most dated thing in the movie.”

This makes us bery happy – the first movie (and, to many, the second too) is an utter classic and it shows proper respect to the originals to bring the stoy back rather than reboot it.

Well played, Columbus, well played.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
