Another day, another step closer to Keanu Reeves’ return as John Constantine…
The highly anticipated sequel has been in development limbo for a number of years, well, ever since the 2005 original came out, in fairness, but now it seems like the gears are really starting to get moving.
In a recent interview director Francis Lawrence said the sequel was “closer than ever”.

He goes on to say that he, star Reeves and writer Akiva Goldsman are “super, super excited about it”.
Although John Constantine in the comics is a blonde Liverpudlian, Reeves’ version of the character, while not embraced in 2005, has become a fan favourite and both actor and fans want him to return to the role.
“We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things,” says Lawrence, adding that the sequel has been on their minds for the last two decades and they have been “percolating on ideas and stories and characters we love and ideas we love.”
The CW, DC Universe, animated universe and HBO Max: How Matt Ryan’s Constantine is the key to it all
In a little update, HappySadConfused host Josh Horwitz is reporting that DC Studios has permitted the development of the sequel under the studio’s Elseworlds banner with Lawrence saying: “I haven’t felt this excited… about how real it could be in the 20 years since we made the first one, so it has a real possibility.”
What does this mean? Well, now that DCU boss James Gunn has established the Elseworlds banner, it means stories don’t have to fit into the core DCU story ie Joker and Matt Reeves’ Batman, so Keanu Reeves can return to the role of John Constantine as much as he likes and it won’t interfere with the DCU as a whole.
Are you looking forward to Reeves returning as Constantine? The first movie is a little gem and holds up remarkably well with age, so a sequel, if they can maintain that type of quality, could be just the ticket.
Thoughts? I know you have ’em, let me know…
