Well, the script is done… are we finally getting Keanu Reeves’ return as John Constantine?
Back in July Reeves said that things were starting to look pretty positive for the sequel to 2005’s Constantine actually happening and they were waiting on a script: “The no’s started to become a maybe which became a kinda yes… and right now waiting on a script.”
Around the same time, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, confirmed the script wasn’t far away and it would have to be good before they moved on a sequel: “I mean, we’ve got to get a good script, but we’re starting great because the movie star that everybody wants to be in business with wants to be this character again. So there’s a lot of room in that franchise to do the kind of soul-searching, crazy, quasi-religious that made the first movie so satisfying. And it doesn’t surprise me at all why Keanu wants to do that.”
He also said during SDCC that they wouldn’t know if any of the other cast of the first movie would be returning until they had a sequel penned, something that Tilda Swinton, who played the Angel Gabriel in the original, echoed, saying: “Unless they’re very late in calling me, I don’t think Gabriel will be flapping his/her wings,” however, it seems that she might still be in the business of playing Garbiel again if the script does call for it.
Well, it seems that all these questions and more might be answered sooner than we thought, as di Bonaventura has confirmed just this week, that he now has the script and is gearing up to read it: “It’s in my inbox right now. Funny enough, I’m too scared to read it, though. I want it to be good so bad. I probably read it in the next few days. When I get on an airplane.”
Like The Batman, it’s likely that, should Constantine 2 happen, it will exist outside of James Gunn’s main DCU, meaning we won’t be seeing Keanu poppin up in Creature Commandos, but that’s just fine with us all here at FTN HQ.
I’m excited for Reeves’ return to the role of John Constantine, that’s for sure, even if it is a very different vision than the original comics portrayed.
Thoughts? I know you have ’em…
