Could Avengers 3 end on a cliffhanger leading straight into the fourth movie?

Over at Scoop they seem confident enough to publish this latest news after a source close to Marvel Studies claimed the battle against Thanos will require more than one movie to do the character justice. After all he is one of – according to Stan Lee – the biggest villains in the Marvel Universe. So, apparently the battle between earth’s mightiest heroes and the mad giant is going to be big, complicated and going to need to be spread out over two movies to give it the scope and justice it needs.

A while back Marvel announced a release date of May 3rd, 2019 for an untitled movie, which lead many to believe this would be the four year gap between Avengers: Age of Ultron and the third installment of the franchise. However, Marvel studios president Kevin Feige hinted that the threequel would be released in 2018. So, according the Marvel studios source they were considering the option as of last year – but have now made a decision of having the battle begin in May 2018, only to be concluded in an untitled 3rd on May 2019.

There could also be the possibility that, although the Avengers 3 will be a two part movie, the second part will conclude with a massive event movie where earth’s mightiest heroes will team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to take on Thanos.

The latter bodes well with what Vin Diesel (who voices Groot) let slip a few months back about Marvel planning to “merge brands” for phase three. This is what Vin had to say about a meeting he had with Marvel Studios: “A great meeting. It was even talking about something so big I can’t even talk about because it’s like the merging of brands in a way, which I won’t get into. That was something way, way, way, way, way down the road.”

With many Blockbusters adopting the two-part movie concept, it’s not difficult to imagine Marvel studios taking this approach, and as it is the conclusion to the three MCU phases. It is also extremely plausible to have both the Avengers and the Guardians (and even the possibility of the Inhumans too?!), as well as other new characters that have not been introduced to movie goers, joining forces to prevail against the infinity gauntlet powered villain.

It will be great to finally see the tour de force that is Thanos. Whatever route Marvel studios take, you can count on something… it sounds like it is going to be an absolutely epic conclusion.
