In 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Sony Pictures seemingly did the impossible, not only bringing back original franchise leads Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and longtime holdout Bill Murray but through the use of CGI, the likeness of the since departed Harold Ramis, reuniting the foursome one final time, with the film serving as a send-off to the character of Egon Spengler, whom Ramis previously portrayed.
With the upcoming sequel further passing the unlicensed nuclear accelerator to a new generation, namely returning Afterlife stars Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard, the franchise will return to New York City in what could prove to be a bit of a balancing act between callbacks and attempting to further itself from past tropes, ensuring both longtime fans and newcomers are left entertained.
In a new interview with the Daily Mail, Dan Aykroyd discusses the franchise’s future, believing that, similar to Ramis, his inevitable passing will be written into the story. However, he does have two demands.
“I’m sure that when I pass beyond the veil, they’ll come up with a story to incorporate me, and as long as my family gets a healthy fee and it’s a good story, I’m fine with that.”

While we don’t ever want to imagine a world void of Aykroyd’s presence, given his lifetime devotion to the paranormal, along with starring in and co-writing the original two Ghostbusters films alongside Ramis, we can’t think of a more fitting tribute when the time eventually comes.
In classic Aykroyd fashion, the actor, who’s been lovingly known as the franchise’s unofficial cheerleader, discussing the potential of a Ghostbusters 3 during countless interviews throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, would provide a pitch for yet another Ghostbusters film, being set in the United Kingdom.
“I have an idea for a sequel I would set in the UK. There are lots of ghosts and mythical creatures in Scotland.”
While second unit filming of the upcoming sequel did take place in New York, the majority was shot in the UK, with locations such as London doubling for the big apple.
