I reported back in January that despite the long time since we met Riggs and Murtagh and the fact that the series was rebooted on TV, there was talk of a new Lethal Weapon movie (here) and now we have more details on what it might be.
Star of the original movies and all round legend Danny Glover, now 73, has been talking about the plot of the potential fifth movie in the franchise and how it would exist in the modern world.
The original movie was written by Shane Black and directed by Richard Donner and became an instant classic, spawning three sequels and making Mel Gibson and Glover bonafide stars.
Glover says that talks about the sequel took place in January (as we reported above) before the world went a bit mad: “I don’t want to give away the plot on the script that I read, but I found the plot had very strong relevance to some of things that are happening today,” he says.
“I can say that. But that was in January. History changes so fast. But yes, there’s been talk about it.
“I can only tell you, if it does happen, there is something extraordinary in it. If Lethal Weapon gives us some sort of contribution to understanding a little bit more. It would be interesting to do. It would be interesting to see how we take this within the political framework we are in; the economic framework that we are in.
“And especially that framework as opposed to the communities that have been affected by the kind of police violence, the kind of police standards, and the power that they exert as well. And what would be interesting from that vantage point is what that attempt could be like at this particular moment.”
While the fifth movie has been on the horizon for a long time I had started giving up hope – given the age of Glover – that this would ever happen and, in honesty, I still have my doubts.
But it’s nice to know that there’s clearly still demand for it and that there’s a want among all involved to do it.
What say you all? Would you like to see the return of Riggs and Murtaugh? Let me know in all the usual ways…
