Dave Filoni says Captain Rex may well be in Return of the Jedi!

What’s the only thing more fun than a fan theory? Well, a fan theory that becomes canon, of course.

Ok, here’s the deal, Captain Rex is a clone who was introduced as the Captain in Anakin Skywalker’s 501st Garrison in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series.

As Wookiepedia writes:  CT-7567, nicknamed “Rex,” was a veteran clone trooper captain who oversaw Torrent Company of the Grand Army of the Republic’s famed 501st Legion during the Clone Wars

When that series ended we thought we’d seen the last of Rex but no, producer Dave Filoni brought him back for Star Wars: Rebels and he is even cooler than he was before now that he’s older and tougher and a little more jaded.

But it looks like Rebels – whenever it ends – won’t be the end of Rex.

Which makes us very happy, indeed.

At the Premiere of the second season finale Filoni talked about Rex – he was reluctant to talk about the future of other characters in Rebels – and confirmed that we may have first met him almost 33 years ago. Wait, what?!

Remember this scene in Return of the Jedi?:

Well, see the guy with the white beard, one over to Han’s right? Well… there’s been a fan theory for a while that he may well be Captain Rex. Which, given that it came so long before Rebels’ new look Rex is very unlikely, right?

Well, Filoni said: “The one thing I have really thought about is I really do think that Rex is that guy on Endor.  I really do.  Why else is there a bearded old guy on Endor? Why?  It makes no sense.  If you don’t want that to happen, do you know what that means?  I’m gonna make that happen.  I’m getting like Palpatine, I’m getting power crazy.”

Ok, so IF this is true, then Rex has existed in the Prequel era, the animated universe and the original trilogy era and, while we may be over exaggerating a little, we think this is massively cool!

One fan theory suggests that “as a commander of the celebrated 501st Legion, Rex was sent on various missions during the Clone Wars that involved acquiring technology for the Death Star which would have made him invaluable to the Rebellion’s efforts to destroy the super weapon.”

So here’s the deal… as far as we’re concerned, Rex is on Endor and it was his knowledge that helped knock out the second Death Star. OK? Ok…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
