We were all very excited to hear that Justice League Dark – a team formed after Enchantress destroyed the Justice League – was coming to the DC Movie Universe under the guiding hand of director Guillermo Del Toro.

In fact, excited was not even a strong enough word… so imagine how crushed we were when Del Toro had to leave the project (here).

Well, tonight is bittersweet as we report that Scott Rudin has stepped up as producer along with Del Toro (no longer directing, sadly) as they are looking to get the script finalised and are approaching potential directors because Warners are apparently very keen to make it happen and want to film next year (2016).

The movie was originally penned by Del Toro and was a slightly horror-led take on the superhero/comic book movie and would have seen John Constantine – DC’s master of the occult – lead a team of dark, bordering on bad guys, characters to save the world. Here’s what the movie will apparently deal with:

“It involves a series of ancient tomes stolen by a madman hellbent on the destruction of humanity. When he learns of this, occult detective John Constantine seeks out a group of heroes that specialize in the mystic and arcane in order to save the world. Though the film’s heroes have not yet been announced, save for Constantine, Del Toro had mentioned that Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan The Demon will likely make up the team.”

It’s interesting that the plot seems to hark back to a lot of what we’re hearing about Suicide Squad which, apparently, SPOILERS revolves around the Squad retrieving deadly weapons for Lex Luthor that he can use to fight super-powered beings. One of the weapons is reported to be Enchantress. Could Luthor eventually beat the League and see the creation of John Constantine’s team? How awesome would that be? DC does The Empire Strikes Back.

We’re hearing that the movie will at first exist outside the other movies – much like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – but will eventually see characters crossing paths and becoming part of the other movie stories.

Rudin’s involvement is exciting, as he’s known for working with real talent like Paul Thomas Anderson, Noah Baumbach, David Fincher, Wes Anderson, Aaron Sorkin, and the Coen brothers.

We’re so excited at all this and how varied and big the DC movie universe will be… we’re hearing the Blue Beetle/Booster Gold movie is still going ahead under Arrow’s Greg Berlanti. It’s a great time to be a DC fan, so sit back and get ready for the ride, guys…

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife.
