Oh yesssssssssssssss…
So, I reported last week, below, how the latest movie in the series, Evil Dead Rise, has a cameo by the great Bruce Campbell and it may even, although it’s off-screen, be Campbell in the iconic role of Ash Williams from the previous four Evil Dead movies and that this inclusion has much bigger implications for the future of the franchise.
The director of the new movie, Ireland’s own Lee Cronin, has addressed the cameo and if it is important: “There is a Bruce Campbell cameo, and that cameo potentially is actually Ash Williams,” the filmmaker says.
“Think about how time works for Ash as a character, and that voice that you may hear is captured on something that was recorded 100 years ago. And the fact that his particular line is a warning showcases somebody that knows more than the other people in the room… I know that sounds very cryptic, but it’s supposed to.”
Cronin explained that with there being three direct storylines in the Evil Dead universe – the original trilogy and Ash Vs Evil Dead TV series, Fede Alvarez’s 2013 remake (which is superb) and now Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise and all three have their own anti-heroes in the form of Campbell, Jane Levy’s Mia in the 2013 movie and now Lily Sullivan’s Beth and Cronin, when talking about bringing them all together, commented: “I wouldn’t be shocked if something like that came together…”
Evil Dead Rise cameo may have pathed the way for Bruce Campbell to return as Ash Williams…
Now, the crux of this whole thing is that Campbell, who has played Ash since the 1981 original, retired from playing the character last year (here), however, he recently hinted that he might come back providing original director Sam Raimi was helming – you can read all the details in the link above.
And that was where we were until now.
Taking to social media and replying to a post that basically said the new movies were fine but they really miss Ash Williams, the actor wrote critically: “I’m startin’ to miss him too, just a little bit…”

Now, look, yeah, this is a vague comment but given that Evil Dead Rise is a big hit and the plan now seems to be to release a new Evil Dead movie every couple of years rather than decades apart, I’d put money on it that Campbell is hinting that he’s set to return to the Evil Dead universe… and, honestly, I’d buy a ticket now for that movie.
What say you all? Is Campbell missing the series enough that he’s prepared to come back and show these youngsters how it’s done? Let me know in all the usual ways!
