It looks like it’s finally happening, as director Jon Turteltaub has confirmed that National Treasure 3 is finally moving ahead with Nicholas Cage set to return as Benjamin Gates.

Appearing on the National Treasure Hunt podcast in Philadelphia, Turteltaub said: “It’s happening. You’re the first people I have said this out loud to. I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop.”

Confirming that things have progressed well and unless disaster strikes, the movie is finally happening: “It’s ‘Hollywood real’, meaning things could happen. Nic gets hit by a bus, there’s no National Treasure 3. If I get hit by a bus, there’s probably a National Treasure 3. Welcome to Hollywood.”

Jerry Bruckheimer says National Treasure 3 script almost done and it’ll be sent to Nicholas Cage for approval soon

With a script finally in place, he says Disney read it and said it “sounds like a movie we can make”.

The series kicked off in 2004 with Cage playing Gates, a treasure hunter who learns there is a secret clue that leads to treasure in the Declaration of Independence. The movie was not a critical success but it found its fandom and led to a sequel appearing in 2007 with Cage returning to hunt down the Book of Secrets, a mysterious book passed down by ex US Presidents and containing, well, secrets that the government wouldn’t want revealed.

For years, fans have been trying to get a third movie and all seemed lost in 2022 when a Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History, starring Lisette Olivera, appeared in an effort to pick up where the second movie left off and to take over the franchise. Luckily, the three people who watched it, thought it was a load of old balls, and the calls for Cage to return got even louder. The series was cancelled after one season.

Well, it looks like Nic Cage is returning and the franchise is set to get going once again… and i’ll bring you more details as and when they’re out there.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
