Oh, yes! News has just broke tonight that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright’s next project will be the Stephen King futuristic hellscape, The Running Man.
And this has us giddy with excitement.
The movie, which will be closer to King’s original novel than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 movie, will be co-written by Wright along with Michael Bacall.
King originally wrote the novel under his pseudonym Richard Bachman and was about a man, Ben Richards, participating in a deadly gameshow called The Running Man which allowed contestants to travel anywhere on earth before being hunted down.
The novel, while not one of King’s better works, is a thrilling read and has 101 chapters that countdown to the inevitable climax… the idea of Wright directing another kinetic film like this has us very excited – Wright expressed interest in directing a remake of this movie in 2017 but we never thought it would happen… sometimes good things do come to those who wait.
Interestingly, the movie will be produced by Simon Kinberg, best known for his work on 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movies.
Anything involving Wright is exciting but Wright and Stephen King? Take all my money.
Wright’s new movie Last Night in Soho is set for 23rd April 2021 – let’s hope the cinemas are open by then because I kinda need to see an Edgar Wright movie in the cinema this year.
Let me know ALL your thoughts, gang…
