So, it’s been a rough week for Spider-man and Marvel fans as it looks like Tom Holland and Spider-Man are out of the MCU forever.
Although it seems that while he’ll not be back in the MCU, Holland apparently will be playing Spidey moving forward, although it will be exclusively for Sony.
Now, while it’s still not completely out of the question that an agreement can be reached between the studios, it certainly seems like this is the end of the deal and, moving forward, Holland’s Spider-man will join what is currently known as the Venom-verse at Sony although presumably Spider-man will come to the fore.
“I’m feeling about Spider-Man gratitude and joy,” said MCU boss Kevin Feige, “We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with the Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen.
“It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”
Now, before we go any further, we have known for sometime that Feige has wanted to tell a story more personal and true to who Spider-man is in the comics rather than the Iron Man Jr that he was in the MCU (presumably due to legal reasons). We also know that Far From Home ended on a cliffhanger (which Sony will likely tie up) so it’s hardly true that Marvel and Feige told the story they wanted to tell, is it?
This also sounds pretty final and that means that it looks like Holland is done for in the MCU.
“Basically, we’ve made five great movies,” said Holland, “It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it.”
As for the character’s future at Sony? Holland said: “The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”
Like it or loathe it folks, all signs point to this being the end of Spider-man in the MCU.
