Hey! Wonder Woman got a new poster and this one features Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. Cool, right?
Anyway, to the main story.
Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, Firefly and Dollhouse has in recent years become a Marvel star given that he was the man behind the first two Avengers movies and reportedly tinkered with several of the MCU scripts, most notably Iron Man 3.
However, it looks like he is now coming into the DC movie fold with Batgirl… however, Whedon was a DC Guy long before Marvel came calling. It just didn’t work out too well at the time.
You see, Whedon had worked with Warners/Dc in 2005 on a Wonder Woman project that he nurtured for two years but eventually had to walk away from as conflict with the studio (what else) rendered the project unachievable.
But now, finally – and perhaps not accidentally given Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman movie is mere weeks away – Whedon’s script has arrived online.
And it is a very different creature from what we have gleamed of Jenkins’ movie. For a start it’s set in the modern day, not WWI, and Wonder Woman/Diana has a rocky relationship with the Amazons and her mother, Queen Hippolyta. Also, we’re pretty confident that the villain of Jenkins’ movie is set to be Ares, the God of War but Whedo drew on another big Wonder Woman villain in the shape of Strife, the Goddess of Chaos.
And of course the movie features a lot of Whedon’s usual tropes and witticisms – and we can see now that DC/Warners had a more straight-faced, serous approach in mind. And we guess that’s why he moved to Marvel.
But with the DC Cinematic Universe now heading in a lighter direction with the establishment of heroes and villains well under way, we’re guessing Whedon and DC are more comfortable bed fellows.
So while we pace the floor waiting on Whedon’s Batgirl, check out his Wonder Woman. Who knows, there could be a Joss Whedon Wonder Woman in the future somewhere…
