FIRST LOOK: Jon Hamm steps up as Fletch in new Confess, Fletch movie adaptation

July 19th, 2022 by Marc Comments

As we reported back in 2020 (here), a reboot of Fletch has been made and is likely to take a different path to the original dup of movies from the 1980s, lending themselves more to the tone of the original novels, instead.

Yes, Mad Men star Jon Hamm has stepped into the shoes made famous in the 80s by Chevy Chase – and once touted for Zack Braff, Jason Lee and Jason Sudekis – for Confess, Fletch, based on the novel by Fletch creator Gregory MacDonald. Above is out first look at Hamm in the iconic role.

Unlike Chase’s Fletch movies which took the character and went in their own direction – by the second movie Fletch was a parody – a funny parody – of himself, wearing disguises and indulging in dance routines –  it seems that this movie, which sees Fletch framed for a series of murders, is based on the story in the novel – the first in the series – and could be hoping to see the novels become a series of movies ala Harry Potter etc.

The movie is directed by Superbad’s Greg Mottola who is no stranger to comedies although, it must be said, the novels are not as funny as the Chase movies but are rather more like crime stories first, witty second. It’s hard to know which way this movie will go as Hamm can play the straight man but also has a great sense of comic timing.

The movie will star Jon Hamm, Marcia Gay Harden, Kyle MacLachlan, John Slattery and Roy Wood Jr and it set to hit on demand on September 16th.

Based on the Gregory Mcdonald novels of similar name, Hamm is set to star as I.M. Fletcher, the quick-witted investigative reporter previously portrayed by Chase in the 1985 cult classic neo-noir comedy and its poorly-received 1989 sequel. The new film is set to be penned by Zev Borow (Chuck) and helmed by Greg Mottola, best-known for directing Superbad and Paul and previously having worked with Hamm on Clear History and Keeping Up With the Joneses.
