On his official Facebook Page, Dwayne Johnson has just shared his first image confirming he’s playing Doc Savage.

The image (below) shows Johnson along with writer/director Shane black and writers Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry along with producer Hiram Garcia.

The actor published the image and wrote:

It’s OFFICIAL: For all comic book fans you already know the world’s first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the “Man of Bronze” himself Clark “Doc” Savage.

Want to thank my bud director/writer Shane Black and his writing team Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry for flying in from LA and sitting with me and our Seven Bucks Productions’s producer Hiram Garcia on this Memorial Day weekend to chop upcreative and break story on this very cool project.

Comic book fans around the world know that the cool thing about “Doc” Savage is that he’s the inspiration for Superman. First name Clark, called “Man of Bronze”, retreats to his “Fortress of Solitude” in the Arctic etc etc.

Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a women’s perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything.
But here’s the #1 reason I’m excited to become Doc Savage.. HE’S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!

Confidently, yet innocently he has zero social graces whatsoever due to his upbringing so every interaction he has with someone is direct, odd, often uncomfortable and amazingly hilarious.

After speaking for hours w/ Shane Black I can see why the creator of Superman took only the best parts of Doc Savage and leaving the “weirdo” part behind. But to us, it’s that “weirdo” part that makes Clark “Doc” Savage dope! Can’t wait to sink my teeth into this one of a kind character.

So, who is Savage? Well, the character is touted as the world’s first superhero.

I’ll not lie, Savage is lost on me but according to the Doc Savage Wiki (http://docsavage.wikia.com/wiki/Doc_Savage): “Doc Savage full name is Clark Savage, Jr., and the son of scientist and adventurer Clark Savage, Sr. Savage had no special powers, but was both physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen inmind and body.

“He’s trained as a surgeon, in chemistry, electricity, engineering, archeology, and many others.

“His father is murdered in the lead-up to the first adventure, The Man of Bronze.

“During his various missions Doc has come to rely on a group of five people which are affectionately called the ‘fabulous five’. They were experts in Chemistry: Andrew Blodgett “Monk” Mayfair, Law: Theodore “Ham” Marley Brooks , civil engineering: John “Renny” Renwick, electrical engineering: Thomas “Long Tom” Roberts and archeology:  William Harper “Johnny” Littlejohn.

“He set up a base on the 86th floor of a world famous New York skyscraper (implied but never outright stated as the Empire State Building) [and] sometimes retreats to his Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic.

“In early stories the criminals captured by Doc received “a delicate brain operation” to remove their criminal tendencies. The criminals returned to society fully productive and unaware of their criminal past (we doubt this will be in the movie).

The Rock and Shane Black? Yeah, we’re definitely interested…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
