The Sandman movie has long been in production, but things seem to be turning around towards getting it into theaters. The writing team (headed by the one and only Neil Gaiman, creator of Sandman) seems to be making a lot of headway script wise. Which leaves the only other big thing unresolved…who will play Morpheus?

Well, if Gaiman is anything to go by (and he is), there was a one candidate who was perfect to play Morpheus…Benedict Cumberbatch.

“It’s a funny thing with Morpheus. Again, it’s that thing where you look around and think, ‘Yes this person would be a fantastic person’, and then time passes,” Gaiman tells RadioTimes.com. “There was a time Johnny Depp would’ve been a great Morpheus, but now he’s too old and it’s fine. I think the first time I saw Benedict was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, ‘wow, that’s incredibly Morpheus’. And fans probably thought the same because they immediately started doing fan-art, meshing the two of them up.”

So why not get him? Well, Cumberbatch is currently signed to Marvel to do Doctor Strange, and it’s unlikely he’ll be able to do Sandman and Doctor Strange at the same time. So who else is out there? Well…

“Then again, Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I’m concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off.”

Interesting, would you want Hiddleston as Morpheus? Or do you have a better idea? Let us know in the comments!
