While we’re all waiting for TRON: Ares to arrive later this year, we’re still wondering why it didn’t pick up on the story left hanging at the end of 2010’s TRON: Legacy, but now we might have an answer.
At the recent Motor City Comic Con, star of Legacy, Garrett Hedlund, took to the stage and spoke about being part of the TRON universe, confirming that while he’s not appearing in this year’s TRON: Ares, but doesn’t mean we won’t see his character of Sam Flynn again.
Director Joseph Kosinski talks about the plot and future of TRON 3
At the end of Legacy, Sam and Quorra, an ISO from within The Grid (the virtual world that TRON takes place in), played by Olivia Wilde, escape into our world, setting up a whole new story arc where a person from within the Grid now exists in the real world – indeed, at the time there was talk that we would see a sequel called TRON: Ascension, where the computer world invades our world, but alas it never happened, however Hedlund has confirmed that, if Ares does well, there is a script written for Sam and Quorra!
Which has me wondering… might we also see Cillian Murphy appear? Fans will recall that Murphy had a (literally) blink and you’ll miss him) appearance in Legacy which was intended to set him up as the villain in the next movie… might we still see that happen?
Thoughts? I know you have ’em and I wanna hear ’em.
TRON: Ares is a follow-up to Disney’s 1982 seminal science fiction film TRON and the 2010 sequel, TRON: Legacy.
Joachim Rønning directs TRON: Ares and says: “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. ‘TRON: Ares’ builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.
The feature film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson.
