Godzilla Minus One director met with Lucasfilm’s Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni

January 18th, 2024 by Marc Comments

you may recall that not that long ago we reported that Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki expressed his interest in directing a Star Wars movie and my response was ‘give him whatever he wants!’, well we may have just had movement of a sort on this.

“I watched Star Wars, and that’s how I ended up being a filmmaker,” Yamazaki said at the time, “I’m really hoping I will get a call and they will bring me on Star Wars.”

Yes! Jon Favreau begins production on a Mandalorian and Grogu movie this year!

Well, now we’ve learned that Yamazaki was invited to Lucasfilm on January 10th for a special screening of Godzilla Minua One with, among others, Jon Favreau and chief creative officer of Lucasfilm, Dave Filoni, the two men who are now, essentially running Star Wars and overseeing its future.

Now, sure, this isn’t any sort of confirmation that something is happening but it confirms that Filoni and Favreau are aware of his interest – something that is bound to have been discussed and that’s certainly great news for a start.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter, Instagram, Youtube, Bluesky,

Minus One was, before anything else, just a wonderful movie about human characters who we genuinely cared about, making their situation all the more engrossing and terrifying, something Hollywood has forgotten how to do.

On top of that, with recent estimates putting Minus One’s budget at under $10m, it also means Yamazaki can deliver a movie that looks incredible and does so for a fraction of the price of most Hollywood blockbusters, meaning that he would be a great choice to be given a Star Wars movie, trilogy, series, whatever because on the strength of Minus One alone, he’s more than fit for the task.

I’ll file this in the drawer marked ‘please, please, please make this happen!’.

Do you agree? Let me know…
