Hamada: James Gunn will be back at Warners/DC for more movie adventures

August 8th, 2021 by Marc Comments

If you’re worried that James Gunn’s returning to Marvel Studios to complete his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy means he’ll not be back for more DC cinematic goodness, then breathe… it seems more is on the cards.

DC Films president Walter Hamada spoke about The Suicide Squad and what the future holds for Gunn in that toybox and, it seems that, beyond the movie and HBO Max’s upcoming Peacemaker series, Gunn is not yet done at Warners/DC:  “Gunn is always welcome back, whatever he wants to do. He really has a vision and he’s a great partner with us,” says Hamada.

“Whenever he wants to come back, we’re ready for him… He’ll be back. We have more stuff planned.”

This is pretty exciting news because we know Gunn has a penchant for the darker, odder corners of the comic universe and that’s a flavour that we’d love to see explored on the fringes fo the core DCEU movies. We already know that Gunn has teased that his next DCEU project will not be anything we are expecting (here).

Meanwhile, Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie said that, had it not been Gunn behind the project, it would never have gone ahead: “If I read the script and didn’t know James Gunn was going to direct it, it would have been a straight-up ‘no,'” she said.

“I was like, ‘No one could pull this off.’ It’s so specific in its brand of comedy and violence. But it came out of his imagination. He knew exactly what to do with it.”

Gunn himself has spoken about future collaborations and confirms that yes, there are other ideas on the drawing table: “We’re dealing with a lot of different things. There are a lot of different things happening at the same time.

“You’ve got the Peacemaker show, obviously, and then there are other projects. So we’ll see what happens. We’re always talking about different things, too, so there’s a lot of dreaming going on and dreaming is one of the most fun parts of moviemaking. We’re dreaming about the different possibilities, and we’re trying to find the right dream that can actually weave itself into reality in the proper way.”

Well, despite the movie’s disappointing performance at the box office so far, the warm reception from the fans and critics alike, means that something has ben done right… now, let’s just hope more of the same is coming down the line.
