Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie finally coming?

It looks like we may have new details on the developing Harry Potter on screen universe we first reported on a few weeks back (here).

At the recent WarnerMedia investors conference CEO Jason Kilar proudly announced Harry Potter as a jewel in their crown of upcoming endeavours: “There’s this little thing called Harry Potter, which is one of the most beloved franchises. And we’re incredibly thankful to be able to partner with JK Rowling and so I would argue there’s a lot of fun and potential there as well.”

In the report, it’s revealed that one of avenues being explored, as well as the Fantastic Beasts franchise and the live-action shows, is a new tentpole movie based on the West End stage play written by Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

This was an official sequel to the Harry Potter books and movies and was based on a story by creator Rowling herself.

The Cursed Child follows Harry’s son Albus and Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius in a time-travelling adventure. Yes, really. Excitingly though, The Cursed Child would feature the original cast as their older, adult selves.

And the play is split into two parts on Broadway and both are movie-length… could we see another two-part Harry Potter adventure? I’d take it in a heardbeat.

And that’s all we know so far.

Tom Ascheim was appointed head of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts properties in January at Warners/HBO Max and his job is to expand the franchise beyond the two core movies series.

As for Fantastic Beasts III all we really know is that all the cast are expected to return with Mads Mikkelsen replacing Johnny Depp as the villainous Grindelwald.

Fantastic Beasts 3 is set for July 15th, 2022 – let’s hope before then we’ll have more Potter-verse adventures to look forward to.
