We’ve known for a while that a Highlander reboot was in the works and now we have our new Connor MacLeod, picking up the mantle from the great Christopher Lambert.
It’s been confirmed that the movie, directed by John Wick’s Chad Stahelski will star Superman himself, Henry Cavill in the lead role.
“Very exciting news today! I’ve been a fan of Highlander since I was lad. From the movies in all of their 80s, Queen slathered glory to the TV show with an actor who looked remarkably like one of my brothers,” Cavill wrote on Social media.
“Being not shy with swords, and having a director as talented as Chad Stahelski at the helm, this is an opportunity like no other. Deep diving into franchise storytelling with all the tools at our disposal, is going to make this an adventure I (and hopefully all of you) shall never forget.”
It’s great to see the star, who has been messed around by DC/Warners when it comes to a new Superman movie, embracing what could potentially be a massive franchise for him. And, let’s be honest, it was probably his starring in The Witcher on Netflix, left, that landed him the role.
The original 1986 movie, directed by Russell Mulcahy, starred Lambert as MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander who discovered he was unable to die and, as time went on, he realised he was one of a group of immortals who could only die by having their heads severed from their bodies and who were fighting through time for ‘the prize’… the gift of being one with nature and knowing all things.
Or something. Look, I love Highlander but parts of it are a bit… fuzzy, ok?
And, for a movie with the tagline ‘there can be only one’, it had a lot of sequels, an animated series and a live-action show too… and now a remake.
While, as a rule, I am against remakes, I think that the Highlander franchise, as it was, had been done to death, so a new take on it might be just what the doctor ordered… after all, the idea is a solid, high concept one and a fresh coat of paint from the man who directed John Wick could give us something very special. Plus, Cavill seems exactly right for this to me.
However, according to the report, there’s no confirmation on of this is a continuation or a full reboot, saying: “It’s unknown the plot of this latest take or if Cavill will be playing a brand new character to the universe or a character from previous projects.”
But I feel confident after the history of the franchise, that this will be a fresh start for the Highlander.
Anyway, let me know what you all think, gang.
