Another Star Wars, another batch of rumours that Hayden Christensen is returning.
In the prequel trilogy Christensen played Anakin Skywalker, the man who would lead to the overthrowing of the Jedi Order and ultimately become Darth Vader.
Ever since Disney took over the Star Wars franchise there’s been rumours that the actor was coming back to the role (here).
Now, given that Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was released in 2005 and Christensen is now 37, it may seem unlikely, given when he back Vader he was in his early 20s.
But we believe that he could certainly be used to voice – or even perform under make-up or prosthetics – Darth Vader or anakin Vader in one of the new movies.
The rumour mill says: “There had already been reports of storyboard and artwork descriptions of some sort of Anakin/Darth Vader force ghost which was visualised for The Force Awakens.
“Abrams designed a powerful scene where the force ghost flickers between Anakin and Darth Vader, symbolising the tormented conflict inside Kylo Ren/Ben Solo.”
This makes sense for two reasons. Kylo’s arc, his whole story, has been based around his adoration for his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker and the conflict in Kylo was represented by the killing of his father, Han Solo, and then his inability to kill his mother, Leia Organa-Solo so Anakin coming to him, to show the conflict is a solid idea.
It also ties back to art and ideas we saw waaaaaaay back before The Force Awakens, that seemed to visualise an Anakin/Vader Force Ghost that was part Jedi and Sith:
Imagine walking a path and seeing that all that waited for you was a tortured afterlife where your soul was lit in two… chilling stuff.
Christensen, despite getting a lot of abuse back in the day for his performances as Anakin/Vader, has been embraced by the fandom in a big way in recent years, so we have a sneaky suspicion this return would tick a lot of boxes with the fans.
