Hocus Pocus sequel officially moving ahead at Disney+ as director is hired

March 8th, 2020 by Marc Comments

We finally have the official news that a sequel to our favourite Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus, is going ahead at Disney+!

While we heard in the past that it could happen (here) and star of the original Sarah Jessica Parker has previously stated that the cast – Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy – were all set to return (here), we have yet to hear anything that had us resting easy that we would see the Sanderson sisters return.

Until now.

Director Adam Shankman, currently working on Enchanted sequel, Disenchanted, will helm the movie while at the minute it’s not confirmed which he’ll direct first.

Officially sources say the original trio are not officially on board yet – although the link above certainly suggests they’re all keen – but it’s believed Disney really wants them to come on board, reprising their roles.

The 1993 original was released during the summer because Disney didn’t want it competing against its own Nightmare Before Christmas later that same year and, because of this, it was a massive flop. However, over the years it has become a much-loved favourite around Halloween and is a much-loved family favourite. And it looks like Disney have realised as much, thankfully.

The first movie saw a trio of wicked witches, the Sanderson sisters, brought back to life on Halloween night and setting out to steal the souls of children all over the world, but who are also horrified to learn that Halloween is no longer a night of evil and fear… it’s a movie that is much more sinister than most ‘kids movies’ allow themselves to be and is likely one of the reasons it resonates so much with its fans.

Personally, I’m excited for this, and I know my whole family will be too, and I look forward to keeping you up-to-date as and when more news becomes available.

But are you excited? I want to know…
