Hugh Jackman talks Wolverine return and how he knew he’d be back some day for Deadpool

December 7th, 2022 by Marc Comments

When we learned back in September that Hugh Jackman was coming back one more time as Wolverine for Deadpool 3, there’s was a lot of excitement both here at FTN towers and in the fandom in general.

Reynolds has pushed for years to have Jackman’s Wolverine/Logan appear in his Deadpool movies and Jackman has said several times that it wasn’t going to happen… but the fans never gave up hope and we all believed that once Deadpool was coming into the MCU, Jackman might come back as he has previously hinted that he would love to be part of the world.

And, well, we’re glad we held out.

And we even think we know how they’ll come into the MCU (here).

But how did it come about? In a new interview, Jackman says it was in the works for a while and that the third movie may not simply be called Deadpool 3 as that wouldn’t sit well with Wolverine.

2017’s superb Logan gave the character a fitting and definitive ending – Reynolds and Jackman have both confirmed that that’s still how Wolverine’s story ends and Deadpool 3 won’t change that – and we never believed we’d see Jackman back again but the star admits that no matter where he goes or what he does, fans are always asking him for one more appearance as the iconic character.

Over the course of the X-Men series, Wolverine remains the only character that’s only had one actor in the role with others all being recast with younger actors as the later movies acted as prequels but Jackman says he couldn’t stand to have that happen Wolverine, saying he was ‘greedy’ when it came to playing him.: “Well, I was greedy,” he says. “I held on to it for 20 years. And then, of course, since I left, it’s been bought by Disney. I’m sure the plans are afoot.”

So, Jackman hangs up the claws in 2017 with Logan… but when did he start thinking that he wanted to come back? Em, a year earlier.

“I went to a screening of Deadpool [in 2016]. I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’ All I kept seeing in my head was 48 Hours with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here.”

So, having missed Deadpool and Deadpool 2, Jackman seemed determined to not let it pass him by one last time; the announcement that he was coming back was in September but Jackman told Reyolds he was in the month before: “I think it was a big shock to him. There was a massive pause, and then he said, ‘I can’t believe the timing of this’.”

By that, Reynolds meant that he was just about to meet Marvel boss Kevin Feige about Deadpool 3 and now that Jackman was in, this suddenly became the movie fans were excited for above all others.

We’re hearing that Zazie Beetz and Josh Brolin are both set to return as Domino and Cable, if true, adding Wolverine to that lineup sounds like Christmas come early.

As for the movie’s title, well, now that Jackman is in, there might need to be a revision to the expected name as Deadpool 3 isn’t cutting it anymore: “Well, not in my heart,” Jackman says, adding: “I’m pretty sure Wolverine wouldn’t like that title.”

Having these guys in the MCU will really shake up Phase 5 and will be a welcome addition to the line-up we know and love.

And in case you’re worried that Wolverine will have mellowed, Jackman assures us that he’s still grumpy and angry and will be making Deadpool’s life very difficult:
