Tom Cruise’s next blockbuster could be Universal’s long-delayed reboot of the Mummy franchise, report Squareeyed.

The Mission: Impossible and Jack Reacher star is in talks with the studio for a lead role in the first of a series of interconnected monster movies, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The project would team Cruise with director Alex Kurtzman (Sleepy Hollow,The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and writer Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange).

Universal Pictures has so far refused to comment on reports linking Cruise to The Mummy – which reportedly will feature a female monster.

Cruise has a busy 2016 ahead, with work on Jack Reacher: Never Go Back continuing and talk of a Top Gun sequel still swirling.

The Mummy is being designed as a lead-off for a shared universe of monster movies at Universal, with FrankensteinDraculaThe Wolf Man and The Invisible Man also tipped as instalments.

Do you think Cruise is the right man for the role? Or, more importantly, do you think The Mummy should even be rebooted? Let us know!
