Kathleen Kennedy talks Star Wars: Episode VII… sort of

April 20th, 2013 by Christopher Williams 2 Comments

It seems that trying to get any information out of anyone in the know regarding Star Wars Episode VII is like pulling teeth, in fact pulling teeth may even be easier.

In an interview with ClevverMovies, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy did her best to stay aloof about the new movies, but still may have given some stuff away. When asked about the technology they will be using to film the new movies, she couldn’t even give a straight answer on that!

It’s not like she was asked about plot details, just if they plan to shoot in IMAX or 3D. She did say that they would look at all that, but come on, just come out and say it! Big Shiny Robot was nice enough to transcribe the conversation for us:

Kennedy: We haven’t really decided yet. We’re still working on the script and still working out the story and really sort of finding our way as of to what the approach will be. But all of the technology is, of course, going to figure into Star Wars.

Interviewer: There’s a lot of talk about spin-offs. What characters are you considering?

Kennedy: We’re definitely writing those scripts and we’re determining what those spin-offs are going to be right now.

Interviewer: Are you interested in having Abrams direct the whole trilogy?

Kennedy: We’ll have to see. That’s the last thing I would put on his plate, he’s got his hands full just getting VII done. If that were a possibility down the road, of course, we would consider that.

Interviewer: Are there any other directors you have in mind for spin-offs?

Kennedy: Oh yes. There’s a lot of wonderful directors.

Interviewer: Can I get a name?

Kennedy: No.

I also find the fact that other directors may be involved interesting. One of the things that made the original trilogy so great is that each film carried it’s own tone, which I think can be contributed to the choice of director just as much as the material itself. Though I do love Abrams, it would be nice to see other directors step in and give each movie a different feel as the material progresses.

I don’t think they’ll change Abrahms if the first film hits the target at the box office – their risk assessments won’t allow it. If Abrahms suggests another director that may be another matter – but that might put strain on his rep and business relationships too. Besides he may be cooking up ideas during the filming of the first.

I tend to agree with you Jim. I think it will have to do more with Abrams availability rather than looking for a different director.
