In a recent interview, below, Kevin Smith revealed that he had finally regained the rights to his 1999 movie Dogma and that he had big plans for it… and now it seems he may have a sequel in mind.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
In the new interview, the filmmaker revealed that he had at one point offered $1m for the rights to Dogma from Harvey Weinstein but was turned down but now he has the rights back and wants to celebrate the movie properly.
Happy 30th Anniversary! Kevin Smith announces third Jay & Silent Bob movie coming
The rights were bought from Weinstein recently and the company that now owned them approached Smith to do something exciting with them: “The company that bought it, we met with them a couple months ago,” Smith said, adding: “ They were like, ‘Would you be interested in re-releasing it and touring it like you do with your movies?’ I said, ‘100 percent, are you kidding me? Touring a movie that I know people like, and it’s sentimental and nostalgic? We’ll clean up.’”
But that wasn’t all as Smith continued to outline potential plans for the movie and its legacy saying he planned on re-releasing on home media and touring it but that he might even develop: “sequels, TV versions, in terms of extending the story,” hinting that we might even see some of the original cast return in some way or other, adding: “[It’s] something we could never do before,” Smith said. “All those people who worked on it are still viable.”
Now Smith is talking up a sequel which he expects might see Ben Affleck and Matt Damon return as rogue angels Bartleby and Loki: “I’m here to tell you… I found a way in!” says Smith.
But what of Affleck and Damon? Those two are massive film stars but they do tend to pop up in smith’s movies, could he really get them back 25 years later? “I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 fu%$ing years, which is why they keep showing up in all the movies,” said Smith.
“Expect a cameo from them — more than a fu&^ing cameo. The only way we get a Dogma sequel made is if they’re there. So count on those guys being there.”
Kevin Smith: If The Flash succeeded, a Keaton-led Batman Beyond movie was coming
Smith has revealed that disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein had in recent years approached him to make Dogma 2, but he thankfully declined.
As a bit of an update to this story, Smith took to social media, to clarify that this sequel is just an idea as of now: “To be fair, I said I started writing a sequel in my head on Thursday night. So a Dogma sequel script is eventually happening… but that doesn’t mean a movie is getting made necessarily. And while I plan to include Bartleby and Loki, I’ve not spoken to Ben or Matt about it yet”
I’m a big fan of Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy and I certainly liked Dogma although I think it’s massively over-rated and feel a lot of that lies in the controversy it stirred up from religious groups at the time it came out, making it something of a forbidden fruit for many and making it almost taboo when, in truth, despite Smith’s usual adult dialogue, it’s a pretty tame affair but I would love to see Smith return to that universe and see what he has in store for those lovable angels this time out.
