“When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood.”
Lionsgate are taking an equity stake of generative AI research company, Runway, which will help them develop new IPs and will also allow them to create AI-generated ‘short episodic series’ of existing Lionsgate IPs.
Ugh.
According to The Wrap, ‘The companies plan to roll out a full slate of co-developed projects blending AI and content, with the AI shows marking the first to be released. They did not reveal which franchises will be used for these AI series, and while some of the most popular IP in the Lionsgate library includes “John Wick” and “The Hunger Games,” there are thousands of titles that could be mined.’
In a press release, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns said: “Runway is a great creative partner, an exciting part of our AI strategy and a valuable driver in expanding our storytelling capabilities.
“This is an iterative process. As we continue to expand the use cases of Runway technology across our production operations and introduce its tools to more of our filmmakers, we believe it will help our talent redefine and reshape the art of the possible in their creative endeavors.”
George Miller shopping a new Mad Max movie (and series) to new studios?
Cristóbal Valenzuela, co-founder and co-CEO of Runway, said: “We consistently see that the studios most serious about AI are thinking about it as a creative resource, not a cost-cutting tool.
“Lionsgate gets that. This expanded partnership will help more stories be told, faster. That’s core to our mission at Runway, and we’re excited to help create the next generation of iconic content.”
According to the new report, Lionsgate was the first major studio to partner up with an AI company but they found it difficult to produce AI movies. This, presumably, is why they’re developing shorter, episodic shows instead.
As of now, there’s no timetable as to when we can expect to start seeing these shows or where they will be shown.
AI is the devil, folks, never forget that. And for all those who worry about the planet, AI is an absolute demon when it comes to using natural resources, in particular water.
Bad movie, Lionsgate, bad move.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
