While Brie Larson’s promise of breaking the internet was a bit of a stretch, it was pretty cool to see all the new images of Captain Marvel.
The cover of the latest issue of EW features the hero – ten years and Marvel’s first female slo movie. The character was a little cryptically introduced at the end of Infinity War and the new movie will see the character in the 1990s and promises to not go the whole ‘origin movie’ route but rather just introduce the character already as the hero we know.
We also learned a few new details in the images which, most noticeably, features our first look at the Skrull.
Here’s what we learned:
– We love Carol Danvers’ NIN tee-shirt and SHIELD cap… pure 90s!
– On Earth Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos (pictured below in his Skull guise as well as his human look) goes undercover as a human working within SHIELD.
– Samuel L Jackson appears as a digitally de-aged Nick Fury in the images for his ninth appearance in theMCU. In the movie Fury, is a ‘SHIELD desk jockey’… with two eyes!
– Djimon Hounsou’s Korath is back along with Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser who in this outing isn’t the extremist we met in Guardians of the Galaxy but is still a high-ranking member of Kree society.
– The film introduces Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau who has a young daughter… who may become a big Marvel character down the line.
– Jude Law plays the commander of Starforce, who views Carol as a mentee and pet project. “These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control,” Law says.
The film sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers. She’s left her earthly life behind to join the elite military team Starforce on the Kree planet of Hala. (Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck describe Starforce as the SEAL Team Six of space.) Its members include Carol, Korath (Djimon Hounsou, returning from Guardians of the Galaxy), and Minn-Erva (Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan).
The Captain returns to save the world on March 6th, 2019
