It looks like Transformers is moving forward on the big screen by moving backwards but, in fairness, that seems to be where the money and audience are.
Word is that Michael Bay, the man behind the first five big-screen Transformers movies from 2007 through to 2017, is close to signing on to come back to the franchise after Paramount had moved away from his universe with Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts and Transformers: One.
According to Page Six, Bay is in final negotiations and is holding out until he gets final cut on the final movie.
There are five Transformers movies in development? Michael Bay returning?
Bay’s return to the series isn’t exactly unexpected as it’s been rumoured on and off many times over the years and in 2019, Transformers producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura said a Last Knight (Bay’s last Transformers movie, which ended on a cliffhanger) sequel was in development: “We are already working on two projects and both have scripts under development. One is the latest in the main family series following the events of Transformers: The Last Knight and the other is a sequel to Bumblebee.”
That Bumblebee sequel ended up being Rise of the Beasts, which came out in 2023 and was also setting up the Transformers/GI Joe crossover movie, which we learned just last week has been cancelled. It’s likely all these things are related and that there are new plans afoot for this (confused and confusing) franchise.
Whatever comes in the Transformers universe, it will, sadly, be without the later Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.
McBride’s GI Joe movie finds its Duke as Transformers crossover cancelled
So, until recently, there were five Transformers movies in development: Michael Bay’s Last Knight sequel, A live-action film from Transformers: One’s Josh Cooley, A Transformers/GI Joe crossover and two additional projects in the early stages.
As of right now, the only one of these that looks likely is Bay’s sequel in light of Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount .
Personally, I would like to see the GI Joe crossover and a sequel to Transformers: One, but I guess that money is what really counts.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
Looks like the Transformers: One sequel is no longer happening
