Looks like the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is coming and may have a director attached!

August 17th, 2017 by Marc Comments

It’s no secret that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie has been a big fan favourite ever since the Star Wars standalone movies have become a thing and it’s also well know that Ewan McGregor is up for it (here).

So this news isn’t a complete surprise but is definitely welcome.

It’s been reported today that the Obi-Wan standalone is now in Disney’s sights as the Han Solo movie prepares to wrap and it has targeted a director already: The Hours and Billy Elliot’s Stephen Daldry.

And… that’s all we have. Well, it seems the Boba Fett and Yoda movie are still in development too. And, em, there’s apparently a Jabba The Hutt movie being considered as well. So that’s cool.

Anyway…

We do know we reported in April that Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail was reportedly in talks with Lucasfilm/Disney to bring Obi-Wan Kenobi back to the big screen by writing the script (here) but so far as we know at the minute a script is not in place.

It’s also unknown if McGregor will be the man to play Obi-Wan in the movie, however we really can’t see it being anyone else. McGregor played him in the Star Wars prequels, while the late Alec Guiness played the older version of the character in the original trilogy.

An educated guess would put the new movie between the events of Episode III and Episode IV – there’s a long time and a lot of Kenobi’s life in those year that is unexplored. However, it’s also possible that we might see Kenobi as a young boy before he met Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn in the prequels. Honestly though, we thing this is unlikely.

It’s also unknown if this will be the next standalone movie or if there’ll be others first – however, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy said at SDCC that the next Standalone movie would be announced soon… is the cat out of the bag early?

Let us know what you all think…
