Mads Mikkelsen to replace Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts 3?

November 11th, 2020 by Marc Comments

Just days after it was revealed that Johnny Depp has stood down from his role as Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts movies (despite having filmed a couple of scenes and getting full pay), it has been revealed that a replacement is already in the wings.

While many thought we could see Colin Farrell reprising the role, having played it in the first Fantastic Beasts before handing it off to Depp for the second, it seems that, no, that’s not on the cards.

No, it looks like Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen is the top choice to be the villain in the next installment of the JK Rowling story.

Word is that he is currently director David Yates’ top choice and he IS in talks for the role.

Depp recently lost a libel lawsuit – and no, we aren’t getting into that – with The Sun newspaper in the UK over abuse allegations between him and ex-wife amber Heard, and it’s pretty much a given this is why he left/was asked to leave by Warners.

The movie itself has had a troubled shoot so far but is now set for a summer 2022 release with stars Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law both set to return as Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore.

I like the idea of Mikkelsen in the role – I’m a big fan of him and am always happy to see him in any role – but I think Depp will be missed because, while the second Fantastic Beasts was pretty dire, he was a pretty unique villain. That said, there’s no stopping a money-making franchise like this one.

Thoughts? I wanna hear them…
