Before we continue… how cool is that Old Man Logan poster from Comicbook?

Anyway…

Hugh Jackman has been teasing the story to Wolverine 3 for some time now. It was back in March when Jackman Posted on Twitter with the hashtag #onelasttime. It was back in July when Jackman asked his many fans what they’d like to see in the film.

All the speculation and all the hints out there have everyone convinced that the third film will be using the Old Man Logan story line.

Old Man Logan is set in an alternate reality where the super-villains of the world grouped together to kill the superheroes. The problem is that many of the characters from this storyline are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and therefore not owned by Fox.

Mark Miller, writer of Old Man Logan, has a few ideas of how Fox could get around this predicament: “No one knows what happened on the night the heroes fell. All we know is that they disappeared and evil triumphed and the bad guys have been calling the shots ever since. What happened to Wolverine is the biggest mystery of them all. Some say they hurt him like no one ever hurt before. Others say he just grew tired of all the fighting and retired to a simpler life. Either way he hasn’t raised his voice or popped his claws in fifty years. His old friends would barely recognize him now.”

In the comics, it is only when Wolverine’s old friend Hawkeye shows up that he reluctantly steps out of the shadows and meets and fights all manner of Marvel heroes and villains, including the Hulk, Kingpin, Red Skull, Iron Man’s armour, Dr Doom, Magneto and The Abomination. Fox has the rights only a small portion of the characters involved.  You now understand the problem Fox face with this storyline.

Mark Miller does have some interesting ways to handle these storylines, quite simply don’t consider them at all: “They’re not important to the story.”

Miller explains: “The way I worked that thing is I actually structured it… I figured out going from this part of America to that part of America and what he would encounter along the way, and then I added in the adversities later. Basically Wolverine doing The Road movie is the important thing and he has a friend [a blind Hawkeye] with him. But that friend could be Cyclops and he could be blind by the fact that his ruby-quartz visor is broken and he has to keep his eyes closed the whole time…

“I kind of like it, keeping it in the X-Men universe a little, too, because comic fans are different from the mainstream world. I know this stuff backwards because I’ve lived my whole life loving this stuff, but most people don’t know all the minutia and everything so I think keeping it simplified and keeping it generally X-Men universe is a smarter thing to do.”

Cyclops and Wolverine on a road trip together would make for a brilliant film in itself, adding the other mutants into it would hopefully make it an even better X-Men film. It’s true the film would be magnificent with all the characters it’s supposed to have but this is a very good compromise.

What confuses me is the continuity of the film as an X-Men film. X-Men: Days of Future past rewrote the entire storyline of the first, second and third X-Men films along with the Wolverine film and the horrific end of the world events that appear in the future in Days of Future Past. This means that they will have to return to a similar storyline to that in Days of Future past; they will have to have it as a single standalone film set in an alternate reality or the story of X-Men: Apocalypse will be more world destroying and terrifying than we first thought. Yet that storyline would have already happened by the time Days of Future Past ends so it can’t be too world destroying.

Wow that’s all confusing.

I think it likely that they will either ignore this fact or just set it in the future anyway and play around with the alternate timeline.

I hope the Old Man Logan story line does happen though because, with everything we’ve heard about it, it’s set to be the best X-Men movie ever made.

Wolverine 3 already has a release date set for the 2nd March 2017. It’s likely the story will be confirmed next year.
