Matt Reeves spills some details on his Batman movie

January 30th, 2019 by Marc Comments

We finally have news about the upcoming Batman movie from Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves… although it sadly tells us little more than we already knew.

We heard before that the movie would see Batman, for the first time on the big screen, portrayed as the Dark Knight Detective. We’ve rarely seen Batman as a detective, as he’s usually helped by Alfred or Lucius Fox, while the fans know that, in the comics, Batman’s skills are better even than those of Sherlock Holmes.

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” says Reeves.

It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been.

“I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

From what we have heard previously, we expected the movie to resemble The Long Halloween or Hush and see Batman step up against a lot of the rogues gallery and Reeves is smilingly agreeing: “There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”

That’s exciting… will we be seeing and hearing of Batman’s greatest villains being cast in the coming months?

Well, maybe not, as Reeves says the movie will likely release around Spring/Summer 2021.

“We haven’t been dated. I wouldn’t commit to this, but we’re thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.”

Reeves also says he’s only involved with The Batman and the connectedness of the universe is not a priority, as the studio has already said.

But… is Affleck Batman? Well, he didn’t say.
