Matthew Lillard talks Stu Macher and if would he return to Scream franchise

April 28th, 2024 by Marc Comments

One of the biggest Scream theories, almost thirty years on from the release of the first movie, is that Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher, one of the original two killers, is still alive in the Scream universe and will someday return to cause havoc.

It’s a theory that is not without its merits as originally Lillard was set to return for Scream 3, he was even paid for the gig! The story would have seen Macher controlling a group of killers form his jail cell and even as recently as Scream VI, it was established that there’s still doubt that Macher is dead, despite having a have TV dropped on his head by final girl Sidney Prescott.

Lillard has spoken about returning several times in the past, going from not thinking it would happen to being keen to come back and now he’s talking about it again as we’re getting ready for Scream VII to film.

Speaking at Calgary Expo over the weekend, the actor made it clear that he’s ready to put the Ghostface mask on again: “I stand at the ready to serve the franchise as it needs to be served. Here’s the good news — they don’t need me. I think it would be fun , but it’s not up to me.”

We break down why Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher may be the villain in Scream 5

I am truly, as we’re known, a Stu-believer, as I totally think that sooner than later we will see Stu return to try to finish what was started in the first movie in 1996 and with the seventh movie seeing Neve Campbell’s Sidney’s family being targeted by the killer again and likely releasing on or around the series’ 30th anniversary, there would never be a better time to have him back.

What do you all think? will Stu return to try to kill Sidney once more? Let me know…

Scream [5] hints that Stu Macher is still alive and not only that but Matthew Lillard is in the movie!
