Matthew Lillard, who played Stu Macher in the original Scream and has forever been rumoured for a return to the franchise, has been asked about returning for Scream VII, especially since this time out, it’s being written and directed by franchise creator Kevin Williamson and while the star says he’s not coming back, he puts a fun little ‘what if…’ at the end.
And, of course, it has us all second-guessing what he meant.
We break down why Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher may be the villain in Scream 5
Speaking at New York Comic Con, Lillard said about a potential return: “I am [Neve Campbell’s understudy], I’ve been working on my girl-ish figure. I will have to [shave the beard]. That comes next.”
he then goes on: “No, I am not in the movie and even if I was, I would lie directly to your face. Until the day it came out, I would just lie to you.”
Addressing the original plan for Stu to return in Scream 3 as a criminal mastermind controlling a group of Ghostfaces from behind bars, Lillard said: “I would love that. I would for sure roid out and get super yoked. I’ll be like a Marvel superhero, but I’ll be Stu, roided out and full of rage.”
There’s a tonne of evidence and theories as to why Stu Macher is still alive and waiting to return to the Scream franchise and we’ve been writing about it for quite a while (links), so it’s definitely not out of the question that he’s coming back… and yes, he would lie directly to our faces if he was.
Ghostface will be back doing what he does best on Friday, February 27th, 2026.
