NERD NEWS ROUND-UP: All the latest news briefs from the Nerd movie world

March 15th, 2013 by Marc Comments

Every now and then news stories come out that, while interesting, doesn’t warrant a full post as there’s little really known. So we collect them and release them periodically in a psot – like this – full of bite sized news stories. Enjoy…

Wes Craven on Scream 5 & TV series:
JoBlo talked with Scream director Wes Craven and the topic of another Scream came up. Craven said: ‘So far I have not heard anything about SCREAM 5 from Bob Weinstein. There is some talk about a television series, but I don’t think anything has moved forward on that yet. That’s what I’m hearing more than anything else from the guys at Dimension. It would be them picking up the phone and asking me if I wanted to play with them, so…’

So it looks like no Scream 5 but the often mentioned TV series will go ahead. Mixed feelings on this one…

Thor: The Dark World trailer:
The trailer for the next Thor movie will debut with Iron Man 3 – yay! – on May 3rd. However, it should be online earlier than that – does that mean UK releases of IM3 will have it since we get the movie a week earlier? Fingers crossed…

Evil Dead 2
Despite the Evil Dead remake not even being released yet, the director Fede Alvarez has confirmed he is working on the sequel…

Smith starting work on Clerks III
Kevin Smith is working on the script of the third Clerks movie as I type. Exactly 20 years after he started production on the first movie…

Monster X script optioned…

Monster X is a screenplay that features Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, Mr. Hyde and other classic monsters who unite when mankind faces a great catastrophe. Sound like Monsters Vs Aliens crossed with Monster Squad and could be a heck of a lot of fun. It was written by Selma Blair’s husband Ahmet Zappa (he worked on a Fraggle Rock movie that never happened) and an unnamed other…

Robocop star set to Run All Night
Joel Kinnaman, starring as Robocop in the upcoming remake, is set to appear in Jaume Collet-Serra’s Run All Night at Warners. The movie also will star Liam Neeson as a hitman going after his old employers, the mob, to protect his family. Kinnaman will play Neeson’s son. So basically Taken 3, then?

Sherlock set to film on Monday and director McGuigan is gone…
Filmmaker Paul McGuigan, who has directed four of the six episodes of BBC’s “Sherlock”, won’t be returning for season three which, according to Sherlockology, will start filming on Monday. McGuigan, as we reported last week, will be away directing Max Landis’ Frankenstein.

Porno is coming: Danny Boyle
Danny Boyle has told The Playlist that John Hodge who adapted Trainspotting is working on Irvine Walsh’s 2002 sequel book Porno to adapt it as the sequel to Trainspotting. However, he said that since Welsh isn’t directly involved, it will be loosely based on it rather than a direct adaptation: “It’s very loosely based on ‘Porno.’ There’s a couple of things that are based on the book, but obviously we’d have to have Irvine on board.”

He also said he’s hoping to get the entire original cast back on board…

Godzilla adds FTN favourites to cast list…
Although nothing is known of Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla remake when it comes to the story, we know there is a great cast lining up.

Frank Darabont’s script is certainly attracting the talent. Sneakers and Bourne star David Strathairn is in talks to play a ‘military figure’. He joins Aaron Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston who are all still in talks. Oh and it’s been given the release date of March 2016.

Nicholas Cage is done with Ghostrider. Em, thanks for the update Nick…
While no right-thinking person could ever imagine Nicholas Cage would be Johnny Blaze again, it’s nice to know there’s no chance we’ll accidentally have to pay to see another one. Isn’t it?

Doing the press rounds for The Croods, Cage told MTV: “”I think the ship has sailed on that one. At least with me involved… Personally, I’m done. I’ve done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I’m done.”

Soooo… when will Ghostrider be in Avengers, or is it X-Men or maybe Spider-man, oh I give up!

So that’s it for this week… phew…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
