As part of Sony’s presentation during this year’s CinemaCon at the weekend, attendees were treated to a special teaser from the set of the upcoming Ghostbusters sequel hosted by producer Jason Reitman.
While no actual footage of the film was shown, it was made clear that despite being filmed in the United Kingdom, the movie will very much be set in New York City, with the characters introduced in Ghostbusters: Afterlife said to now be a “proper family”.
Speaking of that family, stars McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon also took part in the digital presentation, wearing Ghostbusters uniforms, seemingly confirming that not only will Rudd suit up in the sequel, but so will Coon!
While the movie has still not been given an official title, with Firehouse and Hell’s Kitchen, the film is still slated to arrive in theaters on December 20th, 2023 despite only beginning to film this year… which is great news as I was worried that the date might have been pushed back.
It’s happening! Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd to lead new Ghostbusters team in next movie
In other news, an article from The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Afterlife stars Logan Kim and Celeste O’Connor will be back for the sequel, joining franchise newcomers Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind.
And as if that wasn’t enough, you’ll likely recall not too long ago there was doubt over Ernie Hudson’s appearing in the movie (here) and thankfully that’s all been sorted out, but now the actor has dropped a big bit of news in a new interview wherein he talks about the filming of his fourth (fifth if you count the appearance in Ghostbusters: Answer the Call), and he reveals that original star Bill Murray and Annie Potts – Peter Venkman and Janine Melnitz respectively – are both back: “It’s great to be back with Danny and Bill and Annie Potts and the new cast. It’s been forty years, it just feels like family.”
We previously reported that Dan Aykroyd would be returning for the movie (here) but Murray and Potts? While both appeared in Afterlife, there was no real news of them being in this one.
Combined with the massive return character we learned about during the week (here) and the Ghostbusters moving back to New York, this sounds like it could top Afterlife… and that would really be something.
