What?!
So for the longest time we’ve been hoping we’d see the completion of Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy trilogy starring Ron Perlman in the title role… and for a while it looked like it might happen (here) until finally Del Toro himself said it was dead in the water (here).
And now we know why it was so close… it seems that Millennium (the there two movies were made by Revolution Studies and then Universal respectively) were looking at making another Hellboy movie – it just couldn’t decide if it would be a reboot or the third in the series.
Guess which way they went?
Yup. Reboot.
So, here’s the deal, producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are set to bring the Mike Mignola created antihero back to the big screen only this time without Perlman or Del Toro involved – it will also be produced by Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment who publish the Hellboy comics.
The movie is set to be directed by The Descent and Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall and star Stranger Things and Suicide Squad’s David Harbour (above) as the titular character.
The movie is currently titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and will be written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and creator Mike Mignola and will be a solid R-Rated outing.
So, while we are upset that the series is getting a reboot as we’ve longed to see how Del Toro wanted to close out his story, we understand that Perlman is 67 years old now and that’s a big age to be putting on a full body suit to play essentially a superhero and Perlman himself has recently said he wouldn’t want to put the suit on again unless it was for Del Toro (here), so it was getting less and less likely it would ever happen with every passing day.
So, on the plus side, Harbour is a great actor and certainly has the physical presence and attitude to bring Hellboy to life and that in itself is exciting. And Marshall is a solid fantasy director – Mignola’s (who has confirmed the movie on Facebook below) involvement is a good sign too.
It’s just a little sad that it’s a reboot.
