We reported last week that a new Hellboy movie was coming starring Stranger Things’ David Harbour and directed by Dog Soldiers’ Neil Marshall (here) and now we have an idea of the tone of the movie.
Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Cosby has spoken with Silver Screen Beast about the script and what it will e like compared to Guillermo Del Toro’s two outings:
“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment,” he said.
“But I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy. Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.
“Honestly, everyone has just been working overtime to bring that Mignola magic to the big screen. The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be.”
While we agree with all that he says, we actually think that Guillermo Del Toro nailed Hellboy in the movies he directed starring Ron Perlman. The tone of his movies were overall fun but with a dark, gothic underbelly the likes of which only Del Toro can create… so let’s hope they don’t stray TOO far from that.
