UPDATED: Newcomer Jayme Lawson cast in The Batman… have we found our Batgirl?

November 12th, 2019 by Marc Comments

If you have been following the casting news for the upcoming The Batman movie, you will know that, for the first time in the lore, we have a black actor playing Batman’s friend and ally, James Gordon in the form of star Jeffrey Wright (here).

So hear me out on this…

News has broke that actress Jayme Lawson – who has graduated Juilliard and as yet hasn’t even got an IMDB page! – has been cast in the movie in a ‘notable role’.

Here’s the actress:

Now, given that Gordon is now an actor of colour, it would stand to sense so would his daughter… Barbara Gordon or, as she’s better known in comics, Batgirl.

Now, ok, it’s a leap of faith, but given the actress’ age and appearance, I would imagine Batgirl is the most likely choice for us to guess.

Of course, the role could be anyone, but there’s something abut her that has my nerd-radar pointing towards Barbara Gordon.

It’s known that the new Batman movie from Matt Reeves will set up the whole Bat-family, with Batgirl being a big role, so… well, we’ll see.

Interestingly, Lawson, in a now removed video on her personal site, revealed that her dream role would be Catwoman.

Well, we know Catwoman is taken with Zoe Kravitz in the skintight catsuit, so… Batgirl?

The Batman will star Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Paul Dano as Edward Nash/The Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon with Colin Farrell and Andy Serkis in talks to play Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin and Alfred Pennyworth, respectively.

So, I want to hear your thoughts… is the up-and-coming star set to don the ears and cape? Or is she someone else? Let me know…

The Batman swings in on June 25th, 2021.

UPDATED: io9 Are saying her character is called Bella and is “a grassroots political candidate running for office in Gotham”.

Glad I wrote all that other stuff now lol
