It’s a sad day, but it looks like Apocalypse will not have a role for the great Ian McKellan or Patrick Stewart as Magneto or Professor X as the movie will deal exclusively in their earlier lives.

Talking to Larry King, Patrick Stewart said that the story of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr in the new movie – ie himself and McKellan – won’t feature the older incarnations: “I was learning quite a lot more about it last night. It is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters. And so I don’t think we’ll be making an appearance.”

So it looks like it’ll be all James McAvoy and Micheal Fassbender in the roles of the old friends who will soon become mortal enemies.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27th, 2016
