Oh, man… here we go again.
Paul Feig, writer and director of Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, is once again saying that he hopes that his characters can someday crossover and co-exist in the world of the original Ghostbusters and, most directly, in the world of the new movie, Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Feig was on a Television Critics Association for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. After the event, the writer/director talked about the future of his our lady Ghostbusters and if we’ll see them again. Sadly, Answer The Call was a massive failure for Sony and the planned sequels, spin-offs etc were swiftly cancelled.
However, the movie still lingers in the subconscious of fans of the franchise and Feig is still keen to get them on screen once more: “I hope,” he says.
“What’s so great, in the comic book world, they’ve done a lot of crossover ones where there’s like an interdimensional rip and our team joins up with the original Ghostbusters (It was called Ghostbusters 101 and here’s the details of it). So, the fact that that’s already been laid and made comic book canon, anything could happen, so who knows. I would love to see that team come back. We had so much fun making that movie.”
Sony reportedly did have plans to bring the teams together, creating a multiverse of sorts with (here) with Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum attached to star as the original GB’s new team with the Feig team meeting them through an inter dimensional event. We also know that the Russo Brothers – they of Infinity War and Endgame fame – were attached to direct and, how do we know this? Well… because the writer, Drew Pearce confirmed it all!!!
Sadly, after the colossal disaster of Answer The Call, Sony got cold feet and decided that, if Ghostbusters was to return, it would be a smaller, more personal tale… life this:
But, look, the fact that Sony put any money behind more Ghostbusters after the failure of Answer The Call (which failed because it was a reboot – don’t let anyone tell you different) is a miracle.
So, if it does well, we know there’s a couple of other projects on the go in the GB Universe(s), so anything could happen down the line.
But what say you all?
Would you like to see the two universe collide? After all, it did set up Zuul at the end of Answer The Call, so the groundwork HAS already been done on screen and on the page. I just imagine putting those 2016 GBs in a new movie might me cinemagoers’ kryptonite. What say you all?
Here’s our interview with Feig from a while back:
