So, unless you’ve been living under a stone in the Batcave, you’ll know that within the last week or so there was a preview of The Flash which been relatively well-received by audiences.
No, we’re not going to get into details of what plot-points we’ve heard or who lives/dies/appears/disappears etc but one thing we will say is that it will leave the DCEU in a very different place than where it is right now.
We already know that Micheal Keaton is replacing Ben Affleck as the DCEU’s Batman after the movie, although we doubt this will be a permanent change, with our money being on Robert Pattinson’s Batman eventually appearing as the new permanent Batman.
And now we may have a better idea of how this might all come to be as a new leak claims WB/DC has a five-year plan for the DCEU and where it will eventually end up. There’s no spoilers in this article but it does hint and suggest at things you may not want to know. But, remember, it’s all speculation for now.
Just over a month ago we reported that the whole slate of DC movies, The Flash, Aquaman 2 and Black Adam, were all pushed back to next year with Shazam 2 actually being brought forward (here) and, if this rumour turns out to be true, it might be part of the reason for this.
In January 2020, The CW’s Arrowverse shows wrapped up a massive crossover event called Crisis on Infinite Earths, and even that didn’t just involved the current shows but also the past movies, TV shows and even animated series (you can see how that all worked out here) and during the event TV Flash, played by Grant Gustin, met the movie Flash, played by Ezra Miller, and it was really rather fun:
This crossover has led to rumours and reports that Gustin will appear in The Flash movie next year, however, while that’s cool, the Flashes didn’t mean during a Flashpoint event – which The Flash movie is based around – but during Crisis, when all worlds crash together as a ripple tears across the DC multiverse, which has always niggled at the back of my mind… surely Crisis should be happening in both universes, not just the TV one?
And if this rumour is true, then that’s exactly what we’re going to get as it seems DC/Warners may be planning a big screen, massive crossover Crisis event of their own.
The news comes from KC Walsh of Geeks WorldWide’s Twitter, where he drops hints about what he has been told is coming over the next few years, rebuilding the entire DCEU
Here’s some of the points:
- So DC/WBs plan is to build a Crisis on Infinite Earths Event if that wasn’t obvious already
- Batfleck is still very much done with DCEU, but leaving the door open for him to come back during a crisis event if he wants makes sense, but I’ll take the L
- [The Flash] sets up [a Crisis on Infinite Earths-inspired event] at the end. This is the Batfleck scene that people are referencing, it sets up Crisis
- I’m not going to spoil it but it involves Batman
- You’re never getting direct Snyder sequels, [Warner Bros.] are going to make you think you are so you all continue to buy in, like you’re doing with The Flash and then they will bring everyone back for a crisis event and call it a win
This all fits with what we know about the DCEU at the minute. The rumours that Henry Cavill is out, then he’s not, then he’s out again with Sasha Calle’s Supergirl rumoured to replace him; the fact that Affleck is now replaced by Keaton with Pattinson sitting in the wings; we’re also hearing it’s unlikely Ray Fisher will be back as Cyborg and now WB may want Ezra Miller out too, so this would allow them to work around recasting them if need be.
At the minute, the only names safe in the DCEU seem to be Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and keeping Snyder fans onside until the DCEU is resculpted is both devious and clever, after all, Shazam!, Black Adam, Aquaman, Flash, Batgirl are all still existing in the world Snyder originally made.
Personally, In an ideal world I’d want a Crisis movie for sure, but I’d want Cavill, Affleck and the others back at the end of it.
So, that’s the rumour as we’re hearing it. What do you all think? Would a Crisis movie work? Are you ok with it being used as a way to remake the DCEU after The Flash starts that chain of events off next year? Let me hear all your thoughts, gang.
The Flash will race into cinemas on June 23rd, 2023.
