RUMOUR: Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams current favourites to direct Star Wars Episode IX

September 7th, 2017 by Marc Comments

With the news last night that Star Wars Episode IX had lost director Colin Trevorrow we are all waiting to see who will replace him.

With everyone from David Lynch to Guillermo DelToro along with George Lucas – who has previously said he wants to direct ‘the final Star Wars movie’ – and Steven Spielberg’s names being thrown around, it’s hard to separate truth from fiction.

However, speculation seems to be that Disney/Lucasfilm want to return to what they know with the ninth movie and are looking to Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams to look after it. The duo directed The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens respectively.

While Johnson has just revealed that The Last Jedi is, as revealed in The Force Awakens’ opening scroll, Luke Skywalker, people seem more interested in wether or not he’s looking to make two Star Wars movies back to back.

Hollywood Reporter journalist Borys Kit tweeted this earlier:

Could we see Johnson or Abrams back?

Well, we certainly wouldn’t rule it out, but we reckon anything is game until we get the official word.

Who would you like to see directing the final ‘Skywalker’ Star Wars movie?

Star Wars: Episode IX arrives on May 24th, 2019. Probably.
