After just a few days in cinemas, it seems that Disney have already moved ahead with making Ryan Reynolds’ new movie, Free Guy, the first in a franchise.
The movie, which focuses on Reynolds’ Guy, an NPC character in a video game who becomes aware and starts doing his own thing in the game, getting the whole (real) world’s attention and becoming a hero to the people.
It’s a touching ball of fun that is a thinly veiled remake of The Truman Show… but it certainly passes a couple of hours in a time when many people are struggling to find something to be excited for. And that’s a good thing.
But it seems that, despite being a 20th Century Fox movie originally, the movie’s impressive opening weekend projections have made Disney realise that this is a potential franchise and, despite always being marketed as a standalone movie, they want to move ahead with a sequel.
“Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!!” tweeted Reynolds (below).
I’m ok with this, although the movie had a definite happy ending, but never let a good sequel potential at Disney go to waste.
Anyway, have you seen Free Guy? Did you like it? Let me know if you’d be up for checking out a sequel.
