Sgt Rock movie on indefinite hold at DC/Warners

It looks like SGT Rock fans are going to have a while longer to wait before they see their favorite character appearing on the big screen as the DCU project has been pushed back.

The movie, to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes, is pushed back as it was unlikely to meet its summer filming date due to its abundance of exterior and real shooting locations. The movie was expected to film for under $70m, so money was reportedly not an issue.

Tidbit: James Gunn and Peter Safran say that the plan for the DCU moving forward is:  Two live-action films per year – One animated film per year – Two live-action series per year – Two animated series for Max per year.

Word is that Colin Farrell, who is already part of Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe as The Penguin, was all but signed on as Rock after Daniel Craig departed the project, a WWII crack shot soldier who has already had a brief appearance in James Gunn’s new DCU via the Creature Commandos animated series.

New images and details on Creature Commandos PLUS is there a live-action Sgt Rock movie coming?

According to THR, Challengers star Mike Faist had also signed on and a ‘female French Resistance fighter’ role was also cast.

Per THR: The story is said to involve Rock teaming with up with the female French Resistance fighter to find the mystical Spear of Destiny, the spear used to stab Jesus Christ during his crucifixion, which in lore is said to have supernatural properties. They race to obtain it before the Nazis get their hands on it.

Sounds like it would be Indiana Jones meets Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman; could have been a blast.

As of now, the project in no longer moving forward but not considered dead.

Will we see Sgt Rock again in the future on the big screen? I have a feeling Superman’s performance this July might cast more light on the answer to that question.

Thoughts?
