Well, just when I start thinking 2020 has no more wtf moments, we get a cracking wtf moment tonight.
Jamie Foxx, who played Electro in 2014’s Amazing Spider-man in which Andrew Garfield (still the best Spidey/Peter Parker – come at me) played the titular hero, is set to return for the upcoming third Spider-man movie in the MCU.
This is a bit confusing as the Garfield movies were clearly not part of the MCU, so having Foxx reprising the character for the new movie is a bit, well, what?!
So, this isn’t the first time this has happened as we’ve already had JK Simmons back as J Jonah Jameson in Spider-man: Far From Home, returning to the role he made famous in the toby Maguire Spider-man movies, but while that seemed like a cracking bit of fanservice since no bit of casting will ever match the brilliance of Simmon’s portrayal of Jameson; this casting is completely left field.
Now, full disclosure, I am a big fan of Amazing Spider-man 2 despite all its flaws and I liked Foxx as Electro but, let’s not beat around the bush, the movie was not well received and neither was Foxx as Electro (through no fault of his own), so in that respect alone this was unforeseen.
However…
We know that with WandaVision and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness the MCU is going to introduce the idea of a multiverse and that could, we have speculated many times, lead to Sony’s Spider-man movies officially coming into the MCU (which we know they are, anyway) and now we may see it having a knock-on effect here too.
That said, there’s nothing to say that, even if Tom Holland is Spider-man in this movie, Electro can’t look the same in different universes. But… I have a feeling there may be more to this; I reckon this could have something to do with the Multiverse aspect of the MCU moving forward and, with that, my Spider-sense (sorry, not sorry) is tingling and I can’t help feeling that a live-action Spider-verse is coming and, something in the pit of my stomach tells me that we will see Garfield back as Spider-man too. But don’t quote me on that.
As well as Foxx looking likely to return, Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori are all expected to return too. — are expected to be on the call sheet when cameras roll in Atlanta this fall. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are producing.
Word is that currently Marvel has no comment.
